My First Career Pivot

Today, I wanted to veer away from the usual advice-filled posts and share a personal journey with you. This is a story about my own career change, the challenges I faced, and how I managed to navigate my way to a path that aligned with my aspirations.

Like countless college graduates, I found myself stepping out of the university with a degree clutched in my hand but without a blueprint of where my career should head. As such, I fell back on what I knew how to do best, and I started waiting tables. I was passionate and diligent, and I quickly discovered I was good at it. My unwavering dedication was noticed, and before long, promotions were rolling in - from a key holder to a trainer and, finally, a manager.

As I reflect back on those years, I realize that I was essentially allowing my career to 'happen' to me. I was in a reactive mode, responding to the opportunities that cropped up rather than proactively carving out a path that resonated with my interests and future aspirations.

The turning point came unexpectedly on a New Year's Eve. Instead of ringing in the new year with friends or family, I found myself isolated behind the bar at the restaurant, engrossed in the task of inventory counting. As I raised a solo toast to the incoming year, the stark reality of my situation dawned on me. I knew, right there and then, something needed to change.

That moment of realization caused me to take control of my career. It triggered the first major career transition of my life. The journey wasn't a smooth sail, and the change didn't manifest overnight. But I was fueled by determination, and that made all the difference.

Why am I sharing this personal narrative with you? It's not intended as a cautionary tale but rather as an affirmation of the power of choice. We all hold the capability to alter our career paths to bring them into alignment with our aspirations, our core values, and the lifestyle we envision for ourselves.

It doesn't matter whether you're at the starting line of your professional journey, contemplating a career pivot, or striving to realize a long-held dream. Remember this: it's never too late to take the wheel of your career journey.

I urge you to introspect on your career path. Are you merely a passenger in your professional life, or are you firmly in the driver's seat? If you feel the need to take control, think of my journey. Know that you are not alone, and change is within your grasp.

Remember, I'm here to support you. Let's navigate this road of career transitions together.
